Grading

How do we measure proficiency for grading?

Traditional grading systems often combine academic success with school behaviors (such as participation, deadlines, and attendance) making it difficult to determine what the student is excelling at and what they are struggling with.

Teachers measure proficiency in each subject based on a proficiency rubric for each unit. Here is the base model for each rubric. A score of 3.0 is the target proficiency.

Score Description
4.0 Complex content – a performance beyond what a standard requires
3.0 Target content – the level of learning required for all students
2.0
Simple content – basic knowledge or skill necessary for mastering the target content
1.0 With help, partial success with score 2.0 content and score 3.0 content
0.0 Even with help, no success

The rubric will push students to meet the unit's expectations because it explains what concepts they need to understand do prove their mastery. For example:

Score Example Assignment
4.0 The student will solve an engineering problem involving decisions about which material, based on its properties, will best satisfy a set of requirements and constraints.
3.5 In addition to score 3.0 performance, partial success at score 4.0 content
3.0 The student will: classic materials based on their properties (magnetism, conductivity, density, solubility, boiling point, melting point)
2.5
No major errors or omissions regarding score 2.0 content, and partial success at score 3.0 content
2.0
Students will recognize and recall basic vocabularies, such as magnetism, conductivity, density, solubility, boiling point, and melting point. Students will perform basic processes, such as a) making observations to identify the properties of a material b) Taking measurements to identify the properties of a material
1.5 Partial success at score 2.0 content and major errors or omissions regarding score 3.0 content
1.0 With help, partial success with score 2.0 content and score 3.0 content
0.5 With help, partial success at score 2.0 content but not a score 3.0 content
0.0 Even with help, no success
